Recrystallisation during heat treatment of single crystal castings

Turbine blade castings processed in single crystal form are prone to recrystallisation during heat treatment, which is potentially detrimental to their performances and should be prevented. The effect is a complex function of the deformation characteristics of the superalloy, the thermal-mechanical contraction around the core and within the investment shell during cooling; it is also known to be highly alloy dependent. Models are being developed for the recrystallisation process, with the aim to build predictive capability and to elucidate the factors which cause recrystallisation.
