Metallurgical and mechanical modelling of Ti-6Al-4V for welding applications

Weld Simulation is a tool for designing / optimising new welding methods which has been considered for many years. The ESI software Sysweld is widely used within both academia and industry, to perform weld simulation calculations. Sysweld is one of the few specialist weld simulation software packages which allow for phase transformation properties to be incorporated in to the numerical calculation. Sysweld has a substantial material model database containing various steels to be considered for computation. However, as weld simulation is becoming more widespread in aerospace and aeroengine industries, new material models for materials such as the titanium alloys widely employed in this field are required.

A joint venture with ESI's Research & Development experts and the PRISM2 weld simulation staff will allow for a greater understanding to be gained in the formulation of accurate multi-phase material models for Ti-6Al-4V, both in the metallurgical and mechanical side. The project aims to model the growth kinetic of the different microstructural particles and relative coupling with the mechanical strength of the material. These material models will be then incorporated in to the weld simulation process models under development by PRISM2 in Sysweld for a more accurate numerical solution of the microstructure evolution and distortion induced by welding. The usage of the new developed models, more physically based than the phenomenological JMA one currently used for steels, will reduce moreover the amount of experimental data necessaries, increasing the dependence between the analytical material model and the actual composition and metallurgical-mechanical history of the material.
